The Benin History Project is a not for profit organization with a vision to build the largest and most comprehensive online resource for the study of Benin history and academic and personal research on one of the most advanced states in the hinterland of Africa, before the advent of European imperialism.
Founded around 1000 AD, the Kingdom of Benin reached its imperial heights in the 15th and 16th centuries expanding its control through wars of conquest over a large part of what is today's West African. It has survived conquest and colonization by the British Empire following the war of 1897 and produced some of the most intriguing cultural artefacts the world has ever seen.
Our mission is to support the teaching, learning and research of Benin history to help students, scholars and art enthusiasts understand the true dynamics of this history devoid of the bias that has plagued the historiography of this great African civilization for more than a century.
The Benin History Project is designed around a partnership programme with universities, schools, museums, cultural centers and community based cultural heritage projects.
The Project is administered by team of historians, writers and cultural advocates who welcome the contribution of anyone interested in the African history, art and culture.
